solutions for poking dental wire

Poking Wire

Use a clean pencil eraser or cotton swab to gently bend the wire away from your cheek or gums. You can also cover the end with orthodontic wax until we can trim or adjust it.

what to do with a loose bracket

Loose Bracket or Band

If a bracket is still attached to the wire but spinning or sliding, leave it in place and cover it with wax for comfort. If it comes off completely, save it in a baggie and bring it to your next appointment.

Broken Power Chain or Elastic Tie

These can sometimes pop off during brushing or eating. It's not urgent, but call us so we can make sure everything is still working as planned.

what to so with tooth soreness during orthodontic treatment

Soreness or Tender Teeth

Mild soreness is common after getting braces or following adjustments. Stick to soft foods, rinse with warm salt water, and use over-the-counter pain relief (like acetaminophen or ibuprofen) if needed.

Mouth Sores or Irritation

Brackets and wires can cause temporary irritation, especially when you’re new to braces. Orthodontic wax is your best friend here — just dry the area with a tissue and place a small ball of wax over the spot that’s bothering you.

Lost or Broken Retainer

If your retainer is lost, cracked, or no longer fits, call us right away. Your teeth can start to shift within days without a properly fitting retainer — and we want to avoid undoing all your hard work!

if your aligner does fit go back to the previous one

Aligner Not Fitting

If you’re in clear aligners and a new tray doesn’t fit properly, go back to your previous tray and give us a call. Don’t force it — we may need to make adjustments or rescan.

Tips for Staying Comfortable During Treatment

  • Keep orthodontic wax handy — especially in the first few weeks
  • Stick to soft foods after adjustments
  • Use a mouthguard if you play sports (we’ll help you find the right kind!)
  • Don’t eat sticky, chewy, or hard foods — they’re the #1 reason for broken brackets
