Orthodontic Appliances in Oakton, VA
Custom Tools to Support a Healthier, Straighter Smile
Not all orthodontic treatment involves braces or aligners. At Oakton Family Orthodontics, we also use a variety of orthodontic appliances to guide jaw growth, protect your progress, and create the best possible environment for healthy teeth and bite development.
These appliances are custom-made for each patient and are often used as part of early treatment, in combination with braces, or during the final stages of care.
Common Orthodontic Appliances We Use

Space Maintainers
When a baby tooth is lost early, nearby teeth may start to drift — which can block the path for adult teeth. Space maintainers hold the space open to allow permanent teeth to come in properly. They’re simple, effective, and often prevent the need for more extensive treatment later.

Bite Plates
A bite plate is a small appliance used to correct a deep bite — where the upper front teeth cover too much of the lower teeth. It helps guide the bite into a healthier position and prevents wear or damage to the front teeth. Most bite plates are removable and easy to adapt to after a few days.

Thumb Crib / Habit Appliances
Persistent thumb sucking or tongue thrusting can lead to serious orthodontic issues like open bites or jaw misalignment. Habit appliances, like a thumb crib, gently discourage these behaviors by making the habit less comfortable — without shaming or scolding your child. They're a supportive, effective solution for breaking the cycle before it impacts long-term development.

Retainers
After braces or clear aligner treatment, retainers are key to keeping your new smile in place. We offer both removable and fixed retainers, depending on your needs and preferences. Wearing your retainer as directed helps protect your investment and ensures long-lasting results.
Other Appliances
In some cases, we may recommend additional appliances like:
- Distalizers or headgear to help guide jaw growth
- Functional appliances to adjust jaw position in growing children
- Lingual arches for space maintenance or minor tooth movement
We’ll always explain exactly what each appliance is for, how it works, and how to take care of it.
